Bleaching is also hard on your hair, and chemo patients are encouraged to wait six months to a year after the chemo hair grows in because of the fragility of that hair. © Misty Krueger. <image:title>News and Events - My Body, My Story - Join the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) for this special program on Friday, November 18, 9 AM to 1PM. We will be introduced to Maine Digital Collaborative (MDC), a digital public humanities forum for writers to share their perspectives on important contemporary issues—including Health and Wellness. MDC is a project of USM Digital Humanities. To register, send an email message to olliatusm@maine.edu asking to attend either in person or via Zoom. The program will explore health and wellness as a holistic experience, involving body, mind, and spirit. Dr. Misty Krueger, from the Humanities Division at the University of Maine-Farmington, will be the keynote speaker. In "From Blonde to Blue and Beyond: My Chemo Hair Journey" Professor Krueger reflects on her experience of breast cancer diagnosis and treatment through writing as an act of self-expression and exploration. She will discuss how multimodal writing helped her confront her vulnerability, gave her the space to reflect on the relationships cultivated during her treatment, and provided an avenue for cleansing and healing. We will also have a guided writing session led by Dr. Lisa Hibl, Director, Russell Scholars Program, who specializes in writing and the environmental arts. This will be a great opportunity to enhance your narrative writing skills. The program is being offered at no cost; we can accommodate up to 40 in-person attendees and we will offer a hybrid Zoom option as well. The program is co-sponsored by OLLI and the Digital Humanities initiative at USM, the Division of Humanities at the University of Maine-Farmington, and the Graduate Program in Intermedia at the University of Maine.</image:title>

<image:caption>Donna Anderson, Director, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute ”The “My Body, My Story” seminar provided a unique opportunity for OLLI members to explore how expressive, narrative writing can help people to confront and process challenging health situations. The extraordinary generosity and creativity of both presenters and participants made this program rich and moving. At the same time we were able to learn more about the Maine Digital Collaborative, which will be an important resource for future literary partnerships.”</image:caption>

<image:title>News - My Body, My Story: Writing Illuminated Memoir - Both presentations exemplify the vision of Maine Digital Collaborative, said John Muthyala, Professor of English at the University of Southern Maine, and director of the Digital Humanities Initiative. He added: “They are part-digital feminism, part-memoir, part-text, part-text, part-art, part-digital rhetoric. Such work leads us to “narrative medicine,” a concept offered by scholar Rita Charon to understand the interactions between patients and health professionals as storytelling and listening encounters. Charon urges readers and hearers of stories to cultivate “narrative competence,” which is the “the ability to acknowledge, absorb, interpret, and act on the stories and plights of others.” For supporting the event, OLLI and MDC thank members of the Humanities Division at the University of Maine-Farmington, the Department of Intermedia, University of Maine, Orono, and Dean Lisa Walker, College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, University of Southern Maine. Mike McCready of Portland, Maine, helped record the event.</image:title>
